Chapter 1 - The Postcard

Twenty years is a long time to live with a ghost.

I was standing in my quiet kitchen in Ohio when the mail arrived.

Most of it was junk, bills, and fan mail for my husband, David.

He had become a highly successful investigative journalist over the last two decades.

But hidden at the bottom of the stack was a faded, crinkled postcard.

The front displayed a grainy image of the Great Pyramids of Giza.

My breath caught in my throat as I flipped it over.

The handwriting was rushed, frantic, but undeniably familiar.

"He didn't lose me in the garden, Mom."

"He traded me."

My hands shook so violently that the card slipped from my fingers.

Tara was alive.

The daughter I had mourned every single day for twenty years was still out there.

And the man I shared a bed with was the monster who gave her away.

I heard David’s heavy footsteps coming down the stairs.

I quickly shoved the postcard into the pocket of my jeans.

He walked into the kitchen, pouring himself a cup of coffee with a relaxed smile.

"Morning, Sarah," he said, kissing my cheek.

I forced a smile, my heart hammering against my ribs.

I waited until he left for his office before breaking into his locked filing cabinet.

I needed answers, and I needed them now.

Beneath a stack of old tax returns, I found a hidden leather folder.

Inside was a one-way first-class plane ticket to Cairo.

The flight was scheduled to depart in exactly three hours.
