Chapter 5 - The Phone Call

I stared at the bloody letters on the wall, feeling my blood run completely cold.
They knew I was here.
Amina cursed in Arabic, frantically searching through the shattered remains of her floorboards.
"They found my stash, but they didn't find the backup weapons," she said, pulling out two heavy pistols.
She handed one of the cold metal guns to me.
I had never fired a weapon in my life, but I gripped it tightly, ready to kill for my daughter.
Suddenly, my cell phone began to vibrate violently in my pocket.
I had purchased a secret prepaid burner phone before leaving Ohio.
No one was supposed to have this number.
I slowly brought the phone to my ear and answered it.
"Hello, darling," David's smooth, arrogant voice echoed through the speaker.
"How could you do this to us?" I sobbed, unable to contain the decades of agony he had caused me.
"It was strictly business, Sarah," he replied without a single ounce of remorse.
"Tara found a tomb worth fifty million dollars, and the syndicate required an insurance policy."
He told me that my unexpected arrival in Cairo had complicated his final massive payout.
"You have exactly one hour to get back on a plane to America," David warned me.
"If you stay, I will personally ensure that Tara never sees the light of day again."
He ended the call, leaving a dial tone ringing in my ear like a death sentence.
I looked at Amina, wiping the tears from my eyes.
"I am not leaving this country without my little girl," I declared fiercely.
Amina smiled a fierce, dangerous smile.
"Then we are going to war, Sarah."

She pulled out a crumpled map from her boot and pointed to a marked location deep in the desert.
"They are holding her at the original dig site, the very tomb she discovered twenty years ago."
