Chapter 10 - A New Dawn

The entire cavern shook violently as the ancient ceiling began to collapse.
Amina, Tara, and I scrambled into the narrow ventilation tunnel just as the main chamber caved in.
We crawled relentlessly through the suffocating darkness, choked by thick clouds of dust and debris.
The roaring sound of the destruction echoed behind us, threatening to swallow us whole.
I refused to let go of Tara's hand, pulling her forward with a strength I never knew I possessed.
Finally, we saw the faint, beautiful glow of moonlight ahead.
We burst out of the tunnel and collapsed onto the cool desert sand, gasping for fresh air.
The ground beneath us settled, leaving the syndicate's tomb sealed forever under tons of rock.
Amina drove us away in the stolen jeep, leaving the nightmare of Cairo far behind us.
Weeks later, we were finally back home in the United States.
The international authorities had dismantled the remains of Richard's criminal empire.
David was pronounced dead, his legacy forever stained by his unforgivable greed.
But none of that mattered to me anymore.
I was sitting on my porch in Ohio, watching the sunrise with a hot cup of coffee.
Tara walked out and sat beside me, resting her head on my shoulder.
She was finally safe, finally free, and we were ready to start our lives over together.
It was the perfectly happy ending I had prayed for every single night for twenty years.
Then, the mail carrier pulled up and handed Tara a small, unmarked brown package.
She opened the cardboard box, and her hands immediately began to tremble.
Resting inside was a solid gold, ancient Egyptian scarab beetle.

Beneath the heavy artifact was a handwritten note that made my blood run completely cold.
"Did you really think Richard was the one in charge?"
