Chapter 8 - The Cornered Animal

I stared blindly at the desk sergeant, my exhausted mind struggling to process the sheer, unmitigated audacity of her lie.
Vanessa had actually walked calmly into the police station and claimed I was the violent, unhinged attacker.
The sergeant cautiously escorted me into a stark, brightly lit, windowless interrogation room.
Two seasoned detectives walked in holding a digital tablet, looking extremely irritated by the late-night family drama.
I did not wait for them to ask a single question before demanding they check their official precinct email inbox immediately.
The older detective raised a skeptical eyebrow and slowly opened his heavy laptop on the scratched metal table.
I watched his bored, skeptical expression slowly transform into a mask of absolute, undeniable horror.
The high-definition nanny camera footage left absolutely zero room for any false interpretations or clever lies.
The clear video showed Vanessa maliciously slipping the crushed pills directly into the chocolate frosting.
It showed the violent, unprovoked assault, and it clearly showed my mother ruthlessly restraining me while my child suffered.
The younger detective immediately stood up, swearing under his breath, and rushed out of the room to arrest Vanessa.
The older detective apologized profusely for initially doubting my story at the hospital earlier that night.
He informed me that they were actively dispatching a heavily armed tactical unit to arrest my mother and David.
I felt hot, heavy tears of intense relief streaming down my bruised face for the very first time all night.
"Can I please go back to the hospital to see Mia now?" I begged, my voice cracking with pure emotion.
The detective nodded kindly and offered to drive me there personally in his unmarked police cruiser.
We arrived at the large hospital just as the golden sun was beginning to rise beautifully over the waking city.
I sprinted through the automatic glass doors and ran directly to the pediatric intensive care unit.
I reached Mia's private room, pushing the door open, but the small hospital bed was completely empty.

A panicked, pale night nurse turned to me with wide, absolutely terrified eyes.
"Your mother came in with forged court discharge papers five minutes ago and aggressively took her away."
