Chapter 6 - The Broken Mother

I dodged the heavy iron poker just in the absolute nick of time.

The lethal weapon smashed fiercely into the drywall, leaving a massive, dusty dent in the expensive plaster.

"Mom, what is fundamentally wrong with you?" I screamed, backing frantically away toward the kitchen island.

She pulled the poker free and advanced on me with dead, completely emotionless eyes.

"Vanessa is incredibly fragile, and she absolutely needs this money to survive in the real world," my mother reasoned insanely.

She had completely and utterly justified the brutal murder of her own granddaughter just to protect her favorite, toxic child.

I grabbed a heavy ceramic decorative vase from the hallway table and hurled it directly at her feet.

The expensive vase shattered loudly into a thousand pieces, causing her to step back in sudden surprise.

I used the brief distraction to bolt out the front door and sprint directly into the freezing, pouring rain.

I clutched the tiny memory card incredibly tightly in my fist as I ran down the slippery suburban sidewalk.

I desperately needed to get to a computer to copy the video file before taking it straight to the police chief.

I found a dingy, all-night internet cafe a few miles away and quickly rented a corner terminal with cash.

My wet hands shook violently as I inserted the tiny memory card into the plastic card reader.

The video file loaded perfectly, showing the entire horrifying dinner scene in absolutely crystal-clear high definition.

I watched my sister slam my daughter's face into the table while my mother ruthlessly held my arms behind my back.

I quickly emailed the massive video file to myself, my private lawyer, and the local investigative news station.

I felt a massive, incredible weight lift off my chest knowing the undeniable truth was finally out there in the cloud.

I stood up to leave the cafe and immediately bumped hard into a broad, solid chest.

David was standing right behind my chair, his angry face severely red and blistered from the boiling coffee.

He violently grabbed my throat with both hands and slammed me aggressively against the wooden computer desk.
