Chapter 7 - The Desperate Escape

David choked me with terrifying, brute strength, cutting off my oxygen completely in an instant.

The few other tired patrons in the internet cafe ignored us, likely assuming it was just a violent domestic dispute.

Dark, fuzzy spots began to dance wildly at the very edges of my fading vision.

I reached blindly behind me onto the desk, and my frantic fingers wrapped tightly around a heavy, mechanical keyboard.

I brought the hard plastic keyboard down fiercely against the side of his blistered head.

The plastic cracked loudly, and David stumbled backward with a wet, guttural grunt of intense pain.

I gasped desperately for fresh air, coughing violently as I scrambled quickly away from his reaching hands.

I ran toward the glowing red exit sign at the back of the cafe, bursting outward into a dark, trash-filled alleyway.

David was right on my heels, screaming terrible, violent curses into the freezing night air.

I spotted a rusted, metal fire escape ladder hanging just a few feet out of my normal reach.

I jumped onto a smelly, overflowing dumpster and leaped desperately toward the cold iron rungs.

My fingers caught the slippery metal, and I hauled my body upward just as David aggressively grabbed my shoe.

I kicked downward viciously with my free foot, catching him squarely in the center of his bleeding nose.

He let go with a loud howl of pain, and I scrambled all the way up to the flat, tar-covered roof of the building.

I hopped recklessly across the narrow, terrifying gaps between the adjoining rooftops, finally losing him completely in the darkness.

I eventually climbed down three blocks away and successfully hailed a passing, brightly lit yellow taxi.

I ordered the confused driver to take me straight to the central downtown police headquarters.

I walked up to the towering front desk, completely drenched in cold rain and covered in dark purple bruises.

The desk sergeant looked at me in sheer shock as I pulled out my wet phone to show him the sent email.

"I desperately need to report the attempted, premeditated murder of my five-year-old daughter," I said firmly.

The sergeant looked closely at his computer screen and then back at me with a very grim, pitying expression.

"Your sister Vanessa was just brought in here voluntarily ten minutes ago," he replied quietly.

"She is officially pressing extreme assault charges against you for the exact same crime."
