Chapter 4 - The Unholy Alliance

David kept the lethal weapon aimed perfectly at my racing heart.

He had lost full custody of Mia three years ago due to his severe, uncontrollable gambling addiction.

I had absolutely no idea how he knew I was climbing out of that specific hospital window in the middle of the night.

"Get in the car right now, Claire," he ordered with a cold, completely hollow voice.

I had absolutely no choice but to open the heavy passenger door and slide onto the cold leather seat.

The exact moment the doors locked automatically, I realized he was on an active phone call.

He pressed a button on the dashboard, and Vanessa's cruel, mocking laughter echoed loudly through the car speakers.

"Did you successfully catch our runaway mother?" Vanessa asked with sickening sweetness.

David confirmed that he had me securely trapped in the moving vehicle.

I realized with absolute horror that my sister had actually paid my desperate ex-husband to intercept me.

"Vanessa, why in God's name are you doing this to your own innocent niece?" I cried out in the darkness.

"Because our dear mother officially changed her last will and testament last month," Vanessa replied coldly.

"She left the entire multi-million dollar family estate and the private trust fund entirely to Mia."

Vanessa had actively tried to eliminate a five-year-old child over a simple piece of legal paper.

David started driving us aggressively away from the hospital and toward the city's abandoned industrial district.

He casually mentioned that Vanessa had promised him a massive ten percent cut of the stolen inheritance.

I desperately looked around the dark, moving vehicle for any possible makeshift weapon.

I noticed his steaming hot cup of black coffee sitting unsecured in the center console.

I grabbed the boiling liquid and threw it directly into his unsuspecting face.

David screamed in pure agony, blindly slamming his foot on the brake and spinning the car violently out of control.
