Chapter 5 - The Hostage Situation

The threat hung in the morning air like a dark cloud.
Melissa looked incredibly pleased with herself, knowing she had struck my only weak point.
My grandchildren were my entire world, the only light left since my husband passed away.
"You wouldn't use your own children as pawns," I said, my voice barely above a whisper.
"Watch me," Melissa sneered, stepping closer to my face.
"If you kick us out, we are moving out of state today."
"I will change their names, I will block your number, and they will forget you even exist."
Jason stood silently by her side, cowardly refusing to look me in the eye.
He was willing to let his wife weaponize his own children to avoid the consequences of his crimes.
Arthur placed a reassuring hand on my shoulder.
"Eleanor, do not let them extort you," he advised quietly.
"We can involve family court, we can fight for grandparents' rights."
"By the time the courts process anything, we will be long gone," Melissa interrupted triumphantly.
She turned on her heel and marched up the porch steps.
"Come on, Jason, we are packing the kids and leaving right now."
My heart pounded against my ribs like a trapped bird.
I couldn't let them take the children away from me.
I took a step forward, ready to surrender the house just to keep my family intact.
"Wait!" I called out, the word tasting like defeat on my tongue.
Melissa paused at the door, glancing over her shoulder with a wicked grin.
"I thought you might see reason," she mocked.
"Sign the house over to us legally right now, and maybe you can visit them on Christmas."
I looked at Arthur, tears pricking the corners of my eyes, ready to nod my submission.
But before I could speak, the front door swung wide open from the inside.
Standing in the doorway was a uniformed police officer, holding a small, crying child by the hand.
May you like
"Are you the parents of these children?" the officer asked sternly.
Melissa's smug expression was instantly wiped away.
