Chapter 1 - The Front Yard Exhibition

Melissa stood on the porch, her face drained of color as she stared at the front lawn.

Instead of the pristine green grass she expected, my revenge was meticulously arranged for the entire neighborhood to see.

Every single piece of her expensive designer clothing, luxury handbags, and custom shoes was laid out on folding tables.

I had attached large, bright yellow price tags to each of her precious items.

A massive cardboard sign resting against my car read: "Estate Sale to Pay Off My $2,000 Grandparenting Bill."

Neighbors were already whispering and pointing from their driveways.

Jason stepped out of his truck, dropping his travel bags on the concrete.

He looked from the yard sale to his wife's horrified face.

"Mom, what on earth is going on here?" he demanded.

Melissa immediately burst into fake tears, running down the steps to clutch his arm.

"She went crazy, Jason!"

"I asked her to help out while you were gone, and she decided to steal all my things!"

Jason glared at me, his jaw clenched in anger.

"Put her things back inside right now, Mom, or I am calling the police."

I didn't flinch, didn't raise my voice, and simply reached into my purse.

I pulled out the itemized invoice she had handed me the night before.

"I am just trying to raise the funds to pay your wife, sweetheart," I said calmly.

I handed him the crisp white sheet of paper.

Jason scanned the breakdown of charges for electricity, water, and my stay in the guest room.

His eyes widened as he read the final amount of two thousand dollars.

I waited for the righteous anger of a son defending his mother.

Instead, Jason looked up at me, folded the paper, and sighed.

"Well, Mom, you did use a lot of hot water while you were here."
