Chapter 10 - The Price of Greed

The next two hours were a blur of legal paperwork, flashing police lights, and wire transfers.

True to my word, I paid off the massive debt, draining a significant portion of my life savings.

The large men in the SUV confirmed the transfer, tipped their hats, and drove away without another word.

Jason signed the custody papers on the hood of his truck, his hand shaking violently.

Arthur took the documents, ensuring they were airtight and immediately binding.

The police officers finally escorted a screaming, cursing Melissa into the back of a squad car.

She was booked on charges of extortion, child endangerment, and conspiracy to commit fraud.

Jason packed a single duffel bag, his head hung low in absolute shame.

"I'll get help, Mom," he mumbled, refusing to meet my eyes.

"I'll go to rehab, I'll fix this."

"You are not welcome back until you do," I told him coldly, locking the front door behind me.

He walked off down the street, leaving his truck behind, a broken man facing the consequences of his own greed.

The storm had finally passed, leaving the house quiet and safe once more.

I spent the afternoon cleaning up the mess Melissa had made, restoring the warmth to my home.

By dinner time, the house smelled of roasted chicken, and the sounds of my grandchildren laughing filled the halls.

They were safe, they were loved, and the toxic influence of their parents was finally removed from their lives.

I tucked them into bed, reading them a story until their little eyes fluttered shut.

I walked into the kitchen, pouring myself a glass of wine, finally allowing myself to breathe.

The nightmare was over, and I had won.

I went into the guest room to unpack the rest of my things from my stay.

As I moved my suitcase, I noticed a loose floorboard near the closet that I hadn't seen before.

Curiosity getting the better of me, I pried it up and found a small, dusty lockbox hidden beneath.

I broke the flimsy lock with a screwdriver and opened the lid.

Inside was a second birth certificate for my youngest grandson, Tommy, but the father's name listed wasn't Jason.
