Chapter 2 - The Son's Betrayal

The world seemed to stop spinning for a brief second.
I stared at my son, searching his face for any sign of a joke.
There was no humor in his eyes, only a cold, calculating emptiness.
Melissa wiped away her fake tears, a triumphant smirk quickly replacing her distress.
"See?" she whispered loudly enough for me to hear.
"I told you she would try to play the victim."
My heart broke into a million jagged pieces right there in the driveway.
I had wiped this boy's tears, paid for his college, and bailed him out of every financial mistake he ever made.
Now, he was standing shoulder to shoulder with a woman who treated me like dirt.
"You are actually siding with her on this?" I asked, my voice trembling just a fraction.
"It's just business, Mom," Jason replied, crossing his arms defensively.
"We are struggling right now, and you have plenty of savings in your retirement account."
It hit me like a physical blow.
This wasn't just Melissa being a cruel, entitled daughter-in-law.
This was a coordinated scam, planned by both of them to extract money from me.
They had used my love for my grandchildren as bait to lure me into their trap.
I looked at the folding tables holding Melissa's expensive handbags.
"If you are struggling so much, Jason, how did she afford a three-thousand-dollar purse last month?" I asked.
Jason's face flushed red, and he stammered, unable to form a coherent lie.
Melissa stepped forward, her eyes narrowing with vicious intent.
"That is none of your business, you old hag."
"You owe us two thousand dollars, and you aren't leaving this property until you write a check."
I took a deep breath, letting the pain morph into absolute clarity.
"I am not writing a check," I said quietly.
"In fact, you are the ones who owe me, and it is time to collect."
I reached into my bag again, pulling out a thick manila envelope.

"Do you remember the paperwork we signed when I gave you the down payment for this house?" I asked.
Jason's smug expression instantly vanished.
