Chapter 5 - The Fall of Robert Hayes

Robert lunged across the conference table with a desperate, guttural scream.

He reached frantically for the encrypted hard drive resting near my hands.

Agent Vance intercepted him instantly, shoving the older man back into his heavy leather chair with forceful authority.

“Sit down and keep your hands where I can see them, Mr. Hayes,” Vance commanded sharply.

Robert was hyperventilating, sweat beading on his forehead as his entire empire crumbled before his eyes.

He looked wildly at the two board members standing in the corner of the room.

“She is a pathological liar!” Robert shouted, his voice cracking with panic.

“I built this company from nothing, and I would never jeopardize it for a gambling debt!”

I plugged the encrypted hard drive into my laptop and quickly bypassed the security password.

I projected the contents of the drive onto the main presentation screen for everyone to see.

The screen filled with dozens of highly incriminating emails sent directly from Robert’s private, hidden server.

The emails detailed massive, illicit transfers made to an illegal sports betting syndicate based in Chicago.

“You leveraged our entire fleet of trucks as collateral to cover your gambling losses, Robert,” I read aloud from the projected documents.

“When the syndicate threatened to seize the assets, you forced Madison to embezzle company funds to pay them off.”

The two board members turned absolutely pale as they realized the company was completely compromised.

“This is a total breach of fiduciary duty,” the senior board member stated, his voice shaking with anger.

“The company is legally liable for these syndicate debts.”

Robert realized he could no longer deny the irrefutable digital evidence displayed on the wall.

He instantly changed his strategy, straightening his tie and attempting to project an aura of absolute dominance.

“It does not matter what you think you have on me,” Robert sneered, looking directly at the board members.

“I am the founder, the Chief Executive Officer, and the majority shareholder of this corporation.”

“You cannot remove me from power, and you certainly cannot authorize the FBI to seize my servers.”

He pointed a commanding finger at the conference room doors.

“I am firing all of you, effective immediately!” he roared.

“Get out of my building!”

Rebecca Cole slowly stood up from her chair, looking at Robert with profound pity.

“You do not have the authority to fire anyone, Robert,” the company lawyer said quietly.

She opened her leather briefcase and pulled out a thick stack of legal documents.

“According to the corporate charter you signed ten years ago, any executive facing active federal indictment automatically forfeits their voting shares to the board of directors.”

Robert’s arrogant expression shattered into a look of pure, unadulterated terror.

“We are holding an emergency vote right now to permanently strip you of your title,” the senior board member declared.

The board members quickly signed the emergency resolution and slid the paperwork over to the Chief Financial Officer.

“Daniel, we just need your signature to make the transition of power legally binding,” the board member instructed.

Daniel Price stared down at the documents, his hands trembling violently.

He picked up his expensive fountain pen, hovered it over the signature line, and then slowly placed it back down on the table.

“I am so sorry, Ethan,” the CFO whispered, refusing to make eye contact with me.

“I cannot sign this document.”

He pushed the paperwork away and buried his face in his hands.

“Madison told me that if I ever voted against her father, she would send the photographs to my wife.”
