Chapter 4 - The Federal Connection

The revelation struck the room with the force of a physical blow.

Madison stared at the compliance consultant, her confident smirk finally shattering into a look of genuine panic.

“You are lying,” she stammered, backing away from the table.

The consultant reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out his official federal credentials.

“My name is Special Agent Thomas Vance,” he introduced himself properly.

“I have been working undercover in your logistics division for the past three weeks.”

The two board members immediately stood up and moved away from Robert, desperate to distance themselves from the radioactive fallout.

Robert looked like he was going to vomit right there on the mahogany table.

He turned his furious gaze toward his favorite daughter.

“You absolute fool,” Robert hissed at Madison.

“You used artificial intelligence to frame your brother while the FBI was literally sitting in the building?”

Madison shrunk back, clearly terrified by the venom in her father’s voice.

“I had to do it, Dad!” she pleaded defensively.

“He was getting too close to the Cayman accounts, and he was asking too many questions about the quarterly losses!”

Robert slammed his fist down on the table with a deafening crash.

“You were supposed to be careful!” he roared, completely losing his mind.

“I gave you the Director title so you could manage the overseas clients, not leave a digital trail of breadcrumbs for the federal government!”

The entire room went dead silent once again.

Rebecca Cole, the company lawyer, slowly placed her pen down on her legal pad.

“Robert,” Rebecca whispered in absolute horror.

“Did you just admit that you knew about the fraudulent offshore accounts?”

Robert froze, realizing the catastrophic mistake he had just made in his blind rage.

He looked at the two federal agents, who were already pulling out a pair of heavy steel handcuffs.

“No, no, that is not what I meant,” Robert stuttered frantically.

He pointed a desperate, shaking finger at Madison.

“She acted alone!” he shouted.

“She orchestrated this entire fraud, and she manipulated my trust!”

Madison stared at her father, tears of betrayal finally welling up in her eyes.

She realized in that exact moment that the man who had always protected her was now perfectly willing to throw her in a cage to save himself.

Her sadness vanished in a split second, replaced by a dark, vindictive fury.

“You want to play it that way, Dad?” she asked with a terrifyingly calm voice.

She reached back into her designer handbag and pulled out a secondary, encrypted hard drive.

“I kept all the receipts, Ethan,” she said, tossing the drive directly to me.

“I didn't steal four million dollars to buy designer shoes or sports cars.”

“I stole it because our beloved father lost an absolute fortune funding a secret, illegal gambling ring operating out of our Chicago warehouse.”

She looked Robert dead in the eye and delivered the final, devastating blow.

“He ordered me to steal the money to pay off a violent syndicate, and I have the emails to prove it.”
