Chapter 7 - The Hostage

The roaring sound of the jet engines was completely drowned out by the pounding rain on the tarmac.
My father looked absolutely unhinged, his expensive suit soaked and clinging to his shaking frame.
My mother stood frozen in front of him on the metal stairs, her eyes wide with genuine, unadulterated terror.
I pushed the heavy car door open and stepped out into the freezing storm in my ruined wedding dress.
Julian and Chloe quickly followed me, using the reinforced car doors as physical shields.
"Put the gun down, Robert!" Julian shouted over the deafening noise of the storm.
My father let out a manic, desperate laugh that sent violent chills completely down my spine.
"She ruined everything!" my father screamed, pressing the barrel of the gun harder against my mother's temple.
He frantically explained that my mother had secretly transferred the five million dollars into a separate account he could not access.
She had planned to leave him behind to face the FBI alone while she escaped to South America with Julian's estate deed.
"Transfer the money back to me right now, Julian, or I will kill her!" my father threatened wildly.
I stepped away from the safety of the car, walking slowly toward the metal stairs of the plane.
"You are a coward, Dad," I yelled, my voice carrying a strange, unbreakable calm.
"You spent your entire life blaming everyone else for your own pathetic failures."
My father's hand shook violently as his anger shifted away from my mother and directly toward me.
He slowly moved the gun away from my mother's head and aimed it directly at my chest.
"You were always a disrespectful, ungrateful child," he spat, his finger tightening dangerously on the trigger.
I did not flinch, and I absolutely refused to look away from his terrified, pathetic eyes.
In that crucial fraction of a second, my mother suddenly smirked with a terrifying, calculated coldness.
She twisted her body with shocking speed and violently elbowed my father directly in his ribs.
My father gasped in pain, dropping the heavy silver briefcase as he stumbled backward on the slick stairs.
My mother kicked his knee fiercely, sending him crashing down the metal steps onto the hard tarmac below.

She smoothly reached into the deep pocket of her designer trench coat.
When her hand emerged, she was holding her own sleek, silver handgun.
