Chapter 1 - The Speech

The ambient chatter in the grand ballroom began to fade into a nervous silence.
Julian cleared his throat and looked directly at my extended family sitting at the surrounding tables.
He reached into the inner pocket of his dark suit jacket and pulled out a folded piece of paper.
I had absolutely no idea what he was holding.
"My beautiful wife walked down the aisle today with immense grace and unbelievable strength," Julian began, his voice echoing through the microphone.
He paused and looked down at the two empty chairs sitting directly in front of the head table.
"Her father told her that seeing those empty chairs would teach her a lesson in respect and humility."
A heavy, uncomfortable murmur rippled through the crowd of two hundred guests.
"But Robert Sterling did not skip this wedding because of a networking trip to Bali," Julian stated firmly.
He unfolded the crisp piece of paper with deliberate slowness.
"Three days ago, I hired a private investigator to look into the sudden financial anomalies surrounding Maya's trust fund."
My heart hammered violently against my ribs as I stared at my new husband.
"I am holding a printed email sent from Robert to his younger daughter, Chloe, dated yesterday afternoon," Julian announced.
My aunt covered her mouth in shock as Julian began to read my father's exact words aloud.
"Do not worry about the wedding costs or the luxury retreat, Chloe," Julian read coldly.
"I successfully forged Maya's signature on a massive corporate loan to cover your expenses and my outstanding gambling debts."
The entire ballroom erupted into chaotic gasps and angry whispers.
"He went on to say," Julian continued, raising his voice over the noise, "that skipping the wedding was the perfect alibi to avoid looking suspicious while the funds were quietly transferred."
I felt the blood drain completely from my face as the horrific reality set in.
My parents had not merely chosen my sister over me out of simple favoritism.
They had intentionally bankrupted me and left me to deal with the devastating financial consequences alone.
Julian reached out and gently grabbed my trembling hand to steady me.
Before he could say another word to comfort me, the heavy oak doors of the ballroom crashed open.
Two uniformed police officers marched aggressively into the elegant reception hall.
They bypassed the confused guests and walked directly toward our head table.

The taller officer unclipped a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his utility belt.
He looked directly at me in my white wedding gown and told me I was under arrest for grand larceny.
