Chapter 3 - The Setup

I stared at the glowing computer screen in absolute, paralyzing horror.

The name on the massive offshore account was undeniably my husband's.

I slowly turned around to look at Julian, who was pouring two glasses of water in the kitchen.

"Why does this routing receipt say the stolen money went to you?" I asked, my voice trembling violently.

Julian stopped pouring the water and set the heavy glass down on the marble counter.

He walked quickly over to the desk and stared at my laptop screen with a deeply confused frown.

"Maya, I swear to you, I have never seen this account number in my entire life," he said firmly.

He immediately pulled out his own encrypted laptop and began typing furiously.

Within minutes, he breached the offshore bank's basic security protocols to view the account creation details.

"Look at this," Julian pointed to a specific line of text on the glowing screen.

The account had been opened three months ago using Julian's social security number and his corporate tax identification.

"Your father demanded a full background check on me when we first got engaged," Julian realized aloud.

"He used my confidential financial documents to steal my identity and open this dummy account."

The sheer brilliance and cruelty of my father's plan finally became terrifyingly clear.

He had framed me for stealing the money from the family trust.

Then he framed Julian for receiving the stolen funds.

If we went to the authorities now, the digital paper trail would make us both look like conspiring criminals.

"We need to find them before they completely disappear with the cash," Julian said, his jaw clenching in anger.

I pulled out my phone and frantically searched Chloe's social media pages for any possible clue.

Chloe had just uploaded a live video showing her drinking champagne in a luxurious, dimly lit room.

She was bragging to her followers about the beautiful, warm weather in Bali.

I paused the video and zoomed in on the large, floor-to-ceiling window directly behind her head.

The reflection in the glass did not show tropical beaches or palm trees.

The reflection clearly showed the unmistakable, glowing skyline of downtown San Francisco.

My sister was entirely lying about her location, and she was hiding less than thirty miles away from us.
