Chapter 9 - The Missing Brother

The federal agent explained that they had searched every inch of the estate, but Brandon was simply gone.

I felt a sickening twist of betrayal mixed with profound exhaustion deep in my stomach.

Brandon had used the chaos of the FBI raid to slip away like the coward he truly was.

I walked over to the stone planter where he had been cowering just an hour ago.

Hidden beneath a crushed patch of wildflowers, I found a hastily scribbled note on a torn piece of paper.

I picked it up and recognized my brother's sloppy, frantic handwriting immediately.

The note said he had stolen Marcus's secondary ledger from the front seat of the unlocked SUV.

Brandon claimed he was going to use the highly classified criminal financial data to buy his own freedom.

He foolishly believed he could sell the ledger to a rival cartel and disappear into a new life abroad.

I crushed the note in my hand, realizing my brother was walking straight into an absolute death sentence.

I handed the paper directly to the lead FBI agent and told him to track Brandon down before the cartels did.

My phone suddenly buzzed in my pocket, displaying a call from my head of city security.

I answered with bated breath, terrified to hear the outcome of the penthouse raid.

The security chief's voice was calm and incredibly reassuring over the line.

He reported that his tactical team had successfully breached the penthouse with seconds to spare.

They had completely neutralized the three intruders without firing a single lethal shot.

Most importantly, all of my rescue dogs were entirely safe and currently eating treats in the kitchen.

A massive wave of profound relief washed over my entire body, and I finally allowed myself to cry.

The nightmare was officially ending, and the people and animals I loved were completely secure.

I spent the next several hours giving detailed statements to the federal investigators at the farmhouse.

They escorted a furious, handcuffed Marcus out of the house, permanently ending his reign of terror in the region.

Tessa was also placed in federal custody, weeping pathetically as she was loaded into a transport van.

The FBI bomb squad successfully dismantled the explosives wired to the foster barn, ensuring it remained a safe haven.

By nightfall, the flashing lights of the police vehicles finally faded down the long country road.

I stood alone on the porch of my beautiful, historic farmhouse, listening to the peaceful sound of the crickets.

The air smelled like fresh pine and rain, completely washing away the toxic scent of the criminal invasion.

I had successfully defended my grandmother's legacy and proved that I was never a victim.

I finally felt safe enough to go inside and pour myself a well-deserved cup of hot tea.

But as I walked through the quiet kitchen, the secure phone line connected to my panic room began to ring.
