Chapter 7 - The Trap Springs

The moment I pressed the hidden button, a deafening mechanical alarm echoed throughout the farmhouse.

Solid steel blast doors instantly slammed down over the windows of the study, completely sealing out the natural light.

The heavy mahogany door we had just walked through was immediately reinforced by a descending titanium sheet.

Marcus and his two armed guards spun around in absolute shock as the room transformed into an impenetrable vault.

They raised their rifles and fired wildly at the doors, but the military-grade steel easily absorbed the bullets.

I had designed this panic room specifically to withstand a severe siege after receiving death threats from an angry real estate developer years ago.

Marcus glared at me with pure, unadulterated fury burning in his dark eyes.

He demanded to know what kind of suicidal game I was playing by trapping us all in a metal box.

I calmly smiled and walked over to a beautiful, antique wooden bookcase set into the far wall.

I pulled a specific leather-bound book, activating a quiet hydraulic mechanism hidden in the floorboards.

The entire bookcase smoothly slid forward, revealing a narrow, dark escape tunnel built directly into the foundation.

The two guards lunged forward to grab me, desperately trying to stop my escape.

I quickly stepped into the tunnel and hit a secondary switch on the wall.

A thick pane of bulletproof glass dropped instantly, completely separating me from the enraged criminals.

Marcus pounded his fists against the glass, screaming that he was going to destroy everything I loved.

I picked up a small intercom microphone mounted on the wall of the escape tunnel.

I politely informed Marcus that the panic room was completely soundproof and operated on an independent ventilation system.

I told him he would be securely locked inside until the federal authorities arrived to arrest him.

Marcus laughed maniacally through the intercom speaker, his voice distorted and chilling.

He praised my clever architectural trap, admitting he had severely underestimated my intelligence.

However, he quickly reminded me that he still held the electronic detonator for the explosives wired to the barn.

I confidently replied that my estate's lockdown protocol utilized massive military-grade signal jammers.

I explained that his remote detonator was completely useless because no wireless signals could penetrate the property boundaries.

Marcus's arrogant smile finally vanished as he desperately clicked the button on his remote to no avail.

He realized he was completely checkmated and entirely trapped inside his own arrogant plan.

I turned around and began walking down the dark, narrow tunnel toward the safe exit in the woods.

Just before I reached the end, the intercom crackled back to life with Marcus's chilling voice.

He softly whispered that I might have saved the barn, but I had completely forgotten about the live video feed from my city penthouse.

He happily announced that he had given his men standing orders to execute the hostages if they lost communication with him for more than five minutes.
