Chapter 9 - The Final Betrayal

My mother slowly placed her expensive teacup onto the glass coffee table.
Dad stepped into the room, aiming his heavy handgun directly at the woman he had loved for thirty years.
"The elaborate game is officially over, Maria," Dad stated with a completely broken voice.
"Cancel the massive wire transfers immediately, and I might just let you live."
My mother laughed softly, a beautiful sound that felt incredibly wrong in this terrifying moment.
"The money was successfully transferred exactly ten minutes ago," she revealed proudly.
She pulled a sleek tablet from her lap and showed us the completely empty zero balance of the family trust.
"I completely dismantled your entire criminal empire, and there is absolutely nothing you can do about it."
Dad's face contorted with absolute, uncontrollable fury as he cocked the hammer of his gun.
"You completely destroyed your own children's future just to settle an old score," Dad yelled.
"No, I completely destroyed your future to perfectly save my sons," my mother corrected him fiercely.
She pressed a hidden button under the coffee table, instantly locking every single door and window in the chalet.
"The federal authorities have a massive, airtight indictment ready to arrest you tomorrow morning," she explained.
"I stole the illegal money so the government could not seize it, and I put it into clean, legitimate trusts for Emilio and Leo."
I stared at her in absolute shock, slowly lowering my heavy assault rifle to the floor.
She had not betrayed us at all; she had become a ruthless monster solely to protect us from Dad's sins.
Dad realized he was completely trapped and had absolutely no leverage left.
He suddenly spun around and aimed his weapon directly at Clarissa's head.
"If I am going to federal prison, I am absolutely taking a Moretti down with me," Dad threatened viciously.
Emilio screamed wildly and threw his own body aggressively between his father and his wife.
The incredibly loud gunshot echoed violently through the wooden chalet.
Time seemed to completely slow down as a body collapsed heavily onto the expensive Persian rug.
But it was not Emilio or Clarissa who fell to the ground.

Dad dropped his weapon instantly and fell firmly to his knees, clutching a massive, bleeding wound in his chest.
My mother stood perfectly calm by the fireplace, holding a smoking silver revolver she had hidden in her chair.
