Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

I clutched the muddy lockbox tightly against my chest and scrambled backward into the grass.
Tyler swung the baseball bat, narrowly missing my shoulder as I dodged to the left.
I screamed for help, but the estate was surrounded by acres of empty woods.
He lunged again, but I threw a handful of wet dirt directly into his eyes.
Tyler roared in pain, dropping the bat and clawing at his face to clear his vision.
I did not hesitate, I turned and sprinted across the dark lawn as fast as my legs could carry me.
I heard his heavy footsteps pounding behind me, closing the distance terrifyingly fast.
I reached the tall wooden privacy fence and scrambled over it, scraping my arms and tearing my jacket.
I hit the pavement on the other side and ran relentlessly toward my hidden car.
I dove into the driver's seat, locked the doors, and slammed my foot on the gas pedal.
Tyler burst through the gate just as my tires screeched away into the night.
I drove straight to the city and walked into a twenty-four-hour diner to wait for the sun to rise.
I used a butter knife to pry the hinges off the waterproof lockbox right there in the booth.
Inside were stacks of offshore bank statements and encrypted flash drives.
The documents proved my parents had been embezzling millions from a charity foundation they ran.
Tyler was listed as the primary shell company director, tying him directly to federal fraud.
They broke my son's leg to distract him from stumbling upon a literal buried treasure of illegal money.
I called Sarah the moment her office opened and brought her the muddy box.
She was absolutely speechless as she reviewed the financial documents.
Sarah immediately contacted the FBI, realizing this case was now far bigger than a family court battle.
I went home feeling a massive wave of relief, believing we had finally won.
But when I pulled into my driveway, the front door of my house was completely smashed open.

I ran inside, screaming Ethan's name in sheer, blinding panic.
The living room was destroyed, but sitting calmly on the sofa, holding a terrified Ethan by the arm, was my father.
