Chapter 1 - The Steel Rod

The smell of burning charcoal and grilled burgers used to mean safety to me.

That illusion shattered the moment my son let out a blood-curdling scream.

My voice echoed across the backyard as I desperately yelled for someone to call an ambulance.

Nine-year-old Ethan was on the ground beside the grill, clutching his leg and crying so hard he could barely breathe.

A heavy steel landscaping rod lay a few feet away in the grass.

My younger brother, Tyler, still had both hands raised in the air like he was surrendering.

He shouted that it was just an accident.

But I had seen everything perfectly clearly from the patio.

Ethan was not running or causing any trouble.

He had simply reached down to pick up a football that rolled near the flower bed.

Tyler had grabbed the steel rod and swung it like a baseball bat toward the ground to scare him away.

The heavy steel struck Ethan directly on his lower leg with a sickening crack.

The sound of my son's agony froze everyone at the barbecue.

Everyone except my parents.

My mother looked annoyed instead of concerned as she sipped her iced tea.

She sighed and said that boys just get hurt sometimes.

I knelt beside Ethan, trying to keep him calm as his face turned pale with shock.

He grabbed my shirt and sobbed that the pain was unbearable.

Then my father casually walked over and told me to stop making such a scene.

I stared at him in absolute disbelief.

He actually said Ethan should not have been near the garden after Tyler told him to stay away.

I screamed back that he was only nine years old.

Dad folded his arms and coldly stated that maybe the boy would finally learn to listen.

The paramedics arrived minutes later and carefully loaded my crying child onto a stretcher.

Inside the emergency room, the X-rays confirmed my worst fears.

His leg was severely fractured in two places and required immediate surgery.

While the doctors prepared him, my phone exploded with text messages from my family.

Not a single message asked how Ethan was doing or if he was scared.

Instead, my parents demanded I apologize to Tyler for overreacting and ruining the party.

Then my mother sent a message that made my blood run cold.

She warned me that if I involved the police, I should not expect the family to ever forgive me.

I looked through the hospital window at my little boy being wheeled away under the harsh fluorescent lights.

I pulled out my phone and dialed the police department without a second of hesitation.

Just as the dispatcher answered, a child protective services worker walked up to me with a clipboard.

She looked at me with a stern expression and said she received an anonymous tip that I was the one who broke my son's leg.
