Chapter 6 - The Hidden Camera

I listened in absolute horror as my ex-husband spun a web of malicious lies.
He claimed I used to lock Ethan in closets and that my family was only trying to save the boy.
I whispered to Sarah that my parents must have paid him an absolute fortune to suddenly reappear.
Sarah aggressively cross-examined him, poking massive holes in his timeline and his credibility.
She asked him what color Ethan's eyes were, and he stammered, unable to answer.
The judge noticed the hesitation, and I could tell the emergency custody order was losing momentum.
The judge ruled that Ethan would remain with me for now, but ordered a full psychological evaluation for both parties.
My parents glared at me as we walked out of the courthouse, their smugness replaced by pure rage.
My mother hissed that they would bankrupt me before I ever saw a courtroom again.
I drove home with Sarah's voice in my head, telling me we needed undeniable, physical proof of the assault.
Medical records were not enough to prove intent, we needed something concrete.
That night, as I tucked Ethan into bed, I noticed his bicycle helmet sitting on his dresser.
A sudden, electrifying memory hit me like a freight train.
Right before the barbecue, Ethan had been recording a trick video for his friends using his helmet camera.
I frantically searched the helmet, but the small camera mount was completely empty.
I asked Ethan where the camera was, and he softly said he left it on the patio table before Tyler hit him.
Tyler or my parents must have found it and taken it to destroy the evidence.
I ran to my computer and logged into the cloud backup account linked to Ethan's devices.
My hands shook as I scrolled through the uploaded files from that specific date.
There was a video file that had synced to the cloud just minutes before the camera went offline.
I clicked play, and the footage showed exactly what happened from the camera's resting spot on the table.

It showed Ethan bending down, completely away from the garden.
It showed Tyler looking directly at Ethan, smiling maliciously, and stepping forward to swing the steel rod with maximum force.
