Chapter 6 - The Ransom Demand

Daniel spoke with a terrifyingly calm and calculated tone.
He praised me for being much smarter than he had originally anticipated.
He admitted that he underestimated my maternal instincts.
I screamed into the phone and demanded to know where Leo was.
Daniel chuckled softly and said that Leo was currently enjoying a very long car ride.
He told me that he would only make one single trade.
I had to bring Elena and his biological daughter to the abandoned shipyards at midnight.
If I failed to show up, or if I brought the police, Leo would never come home.
He hung up the phone before I could say another word.
I collapsed onto the bedroom floor and sobbed into my hands.
I had to choose between saving my seven-year-old son or protecting my newborn baby.
It was an impossible nightmare that no mother should ever have to face.
I climbed back out of the basement window and ran through the woods.
I reached the stolen truck and slammed the passenger door shut.
Elena took one look at my devastated face and knew exactly what had happened.
I told her about the horrific ultimatum that Daniel had presented to me.
I promised Elena that I would not sacrifice her or her daughter to that monster.
Elena took a deep breath and looked at me with fierce determination.
She said she was tired of running and being controlled by abusive men.
She told me she had a contact who sold illegal explosives on the black market.
We were not going to the shipyards to make a peaceful trade.
We were going to the shipyards to completely destroy Daniel’s empire.
We drove to a shady mechanic shop and purchased a crate of military smoke grenades.
Elena loaded the heavy grenades into the bottom compartment of a baby stroller.
We drove toward the dark, foggy harbor as midnight rapidly approached.

I pushed the heavy stroller toward the towering shipping containers.
A bright red laser sight suddenly appeared directly over my heart.
