Chapter 8 - The Husband's Sacrifice

Michael leaned heavily against the doorframe, his hospital gown stained with fresh, dark blood from his surgical wounds.
"They are coming back up the stairs, Sarah, you have to get Emma out of here," he gasped, fighting through agonizing pain.
The stolen police radio in his hand crackled with Detective Miller's corrupt voice ordering a complete lockdown of the floor.
"You lied to me, Michael, you sold our daughter's life to pay your debts!" I yelled, refusing to let him near her bed.
He fell to his knees, tears streaming down his pale, exhausted face.
"I never agreed to hurt Emma, I swear to God, they forged those policies to force my hand," he sobbed desperately.
He explained that he had stolen millions from the cartel to fund a cure for a rare genetic disease, not for selfish greed.
When the cartel found out, they bypassed him completely and used Jessica's deep jealousy to execute the hit.
"I took the bullet in the garage trying to expose Chloe, and I will die before I let them touch you," he promised.
I looked into his eyes and saw the absolute, undeniable truth of a terrified, desperate father.
"Help me unhook her monitors, we are taking her to the roof," I commanded the security guards.
We quickly disconnected Emma from the heavy machines, wrapping her fragile body in a thick, warm blanket.
I carried my daughter in my arms while Michael forced himself to stand and lead the way toward the service elevators.
We reached the heavy steel doors just as the elevator pinged and opened.
Three heavily armed men in dark tactical gear stepped out, holding assault rifles.
"There they are, take them down!" the lead mercenary shouted, raising his weapon.
Michael did not hesitate for a single fraction of a second.
He grabbed a heavy fire extinguisher from the wall and charged directly into the line of fire to shield us.
He sprayed the thick, blinding white foam into the faces of the armed men, creating a massive cloud of chaos.

"Run to the helipad, Sarah, go now!" Michael roared as multiple gunshots echoed in the confined hallway.
I turned and sprinted up the concrete stairwell toward the roof, hearing my husband's agonizing screams fading behind me.
