Chapter 5 - The Sister's Betrayal

My blood ran absolutely cold as I stared at the medical syringe partially hidden in my sister's bag.

"Why do you have a syringe in your purse, Jessica?" I asked, my voice deadly calm despite the panic tearing through my chest.

Her warm, comforting smile vanished instantly, replaced by a cold and calculating stare.

She looked toward the open doorway, checking to see if any nurses or police officers were nearby in the hall.

"I always knew you were too observant for your own good, Sarah," she said, stepping fully into the room and closing the heavy door.

She locked the deadbolt with a loud, metallic click that echoed like a gunshot in the quiet room.

"You took out a five-million-dollar life insurance policy on my daughter," I stated, backing away from her and putting Emma's bed between us.

Jessica laughed, a dry and humorless sound that chilled me to the bone.

"Michael took out the policy, but he owed my dangerous creditors a massive debt," she corrected me casually.

She explained that Michael had secretly borrowed millions from an underground syndicate to keep his pharmaceutical company afloat.

When he could not pay the money back, Jessica brokered a deal to sacrifice Emma to clear the debt and secure her own financial future.

"You are a monster, she is your own niece!" I screamed, lunging for the emergency call button on the wall.

Jessica moved with terrifying speed, grabbing a heavy metal IV pole and swinging it aggressively at my hand.

The metal struck my wrist, sending a sharp, agonizing shock of pain up my arm.

"Chloe was supposed to frame Michael and finish the job in the parking garage, but she clearly failed," Jessica sneered.

She pulled the empty syringe from her purse, revealing that it was not actually empty at all.

It contained a secondary, lethal dose of the untraceable industrial toxin.

"I am just going to inject this into her IV line, and her heart will stop in exactly sixty seconds," she explained clinically.

She stepped toward the sleeping child, raising the deadly needle toward the plastic tubing.

I grabbed a glass water pitcher from the bedside table and smashed it violently over my sister's head.
