Chapter 6 - The Dirty Detective

Jessica screamed in pain as the heavy glass shattered, sending water and sharp shards raining down onto the floor.

She stumbled backward, clutching her bleeding forehead, but she did not drop the lethal syringe.

I tackled her to the ground, fighting with the fierce, unyielding strength of a desperate mother protecting her child.

We wrestled on the slick, wet linoleum, her sharp fingernails tearing into the skin of my arms and neck.

"You have always had the perfect life, and it is my turn to have the money!" Jessica shrieked, kicking me hard in the stomach.

The breath completely left my lungs, and I rolled off her, gasping for air.

Jessica scrambled to her feet and lunged toward Emma's exposed IV line once again.

Before she could plunge the needle into the tube, the locked hospital door was kicked entirely off its hinges.

Detective Miller burst into the room with his service weapon drawn and aimed directly at my sister.

"Drop the needle right now and get your hands on your head!" he roared with absolute authority.

I sobbed in pure relief, thanking God that the kind detective had arrived just in time to save my daughter.

Jessica froze, looking at the gun pointed at her chest, and then slowly smiled a wicked, terrifying smile.

She did not drop the syringe, nor did she put her hands in the air.

"You are late, Miller," Jessica said casually, brushing the glass out of her hair.

Detective Miller lowered his weapon completely and let out a long, frustrated sigh.

"Chloe completely botched the parking garage hit, and Michael is currently surviving in surgery," Miller complained to my sister.

I stared at the respected police detective in absolute, uncomprehending horror.

He was not here to save me or my innocent daughter.

Detective Miller was the corrupt inside man working for the syndicate to ensure the insurance money was collected.

"Kill the mother and make it look like a tragic murder-suicide," Miller instructed Jessica coldly.

He reached into his jacket and pulled out a suppressed handgun, aiming it directly at my face.
