Chapter 2 - The Poisoned Lunch

I watched in absolute disbelief as my husband disappeared around the corner of the busy trauma ward.

One of the police officers immediately chased after him, shouting into his shoulder radio for backup.

The second officer, a tall detective with kind eyes, stepped into the room and gently closed the door.

"Mrs. Johnson, my name is Detective Miller," he said, pulling a small notepad from his pocket.

I sank into the plastic chair beside Emma’s bed, clutching her small, fragile hand in mine.

"My husband just ran away," I choked out, the reality of the nightmare finally crashing over me.

"We have officers securing all the exits, he will not get far," the detective assured me in a calm tone.

Detective Miller walked over to the small table where the nurses had placed Emma's personal belongings.

He pulled on a pair of blue latex gloves and carefully unzipped her bright pink school backpack.

"The school nurse gave us the lunchbox you packed for her this morning," he explained.

My heart pounded furiously as I remembered making her favorite turkey sandwich and cutting the crusts off exactly the way she liked.

The detective pulled out a small, plastic juice bottle that I recognized immediately.

"Our lab ran a rapid test on the remaining liquid inside this bottle," Detective Miller said grimly.

"The industrial toxin that caused your daughter's heart to fail was injected directly into this juice."

I gasped for air, feeling the room violently spin around me.

"But I packed that lunchbox myself," I cried, tears spilling hot and fast down my cheeks.

"I took that bottle directly from our own refrigerator."

Detective Miller looked at me with deep, unsettling pity.

"That means the person who poisoned your daughter was inside your house this morning."

Before I could process this horrifying realization, a nurse rushed into the room with a terrified expression.

"Detective, your men just found Michael Johnson in the underground parking garage," she yelled frantically.

"He is currently holding a loaded gun to the head of a female hostage."
