Chapter 7 - The Desperate Escape

The cold, black barrel of the suppressed handgun looked massive as Detective Miller pointed it squarely at my forehead.

"Write a quick suicide note on her phone, Jessica," Miller ordered calmly, as if he were simply ordering lunch.

Jessica pulled my cell phone from my jacket pocket and began typing a fake confession about poisoning my own child.

I knew that if I did not act in the next five seconds, both Emma and I would be dead.

I looked frantically around the small hospital room for anything I could use as a weapon.

My eyes locked onto the heavy, rolling defibrillator machine stationed near the wall for cardiac emergencies.

I kicked the rolling cart with every single ounce of strength I possessed.

The heavy machine slammed directly into Detective Miller's knees, causing him to stumble and misdirect his aim.

The suppressed gun fired with a quiet 'pfft' sound, sending a bullet shattering through the hospital window instead of my skull.

I grabbed the thick, heavy shock paddles from the machine and slammed them violently against Jessica's chest.

I hit the manual discharge button, sending a massive jolt of electricity tearing through my sister's body.

Jessica violently convulsed and collapsed to the floor, completely unconscious and dropping my phone.

Miller recovered his balance and swung his weapon back toward me in a fit of rage.

Before he could pull the trigger again, the blaring, high-pitched wail of the hospital fire alarm suddenly erupted.

The broken window had triggered the emergency lockdown protocols, flooding the hallway with panicked nurses and security guards.

Miller cursed loudly, realizing he could not easily execute me with dozens of witnesses rushing toward the room.

He shoved his weapon back into his holster and dragged Jessica's unconscious body toward the shattered window.

"This is not over, Sarah, the syndicate never leaves a debt unpaid," he threatened fiercely.

He threw my sister over his shoulder and escaped through the broken glass onto the adjacent fire escape.

I collapsed onto the floor beside Emma's bed, shaking violently as the hospital security finally burst into the room.

"My daughter is still in danger, we have to move her right now!" I screamed to the bewildered guards.

Before they could respond, a bloody, heavily bandaged man stumbled into the doorway.

It was Michael, fresh out of surgery, holding a stolen police radio in his trembling hand.
