Chapter 5 - The Ultimate Ransom

Maya screamed her son's name, sprinting desperately out the back door into the freezing, dark woods.
The endless darkness swallowed her voice, returning absolutely nothing but the hollow sound of the pouring rain.
Julian rushed after her, grabbing her shoulders forcefully to stop her from running blindly into a deadly trap.
He pleaded firmly that Vanessa had the boy, and running into the dark would only get Maya killed.
Maya collapsed onto the wet grass, sobbing uncontrollably as the living nightmare finally broke her fierce spirit.
Elena knelt beside her weeping sister, wrapping her bruised arms around Maya to offer whatever comfort she could muster.
A sudden, sharp buzzing sound interrupted the tragic, heavy silence of the forest.
Maya reached into her pocket and pulled out a sleek burner phone that she definitely did not recognize.
Someone must have secretly slipped it into her coat during the chaotic brawl at the safe house.
She answered the call, her hand trembling violently as she pressed the cold plastic against her ear.
Vanessa's sickeningly sweet voice echoed through the speaker, happily announcing that she had the beautiful little boy.
Vanessa explicitly ordered Maya to bring the orchid ring to the old shipyard at dawn if she wanted to see him alive again.
She warned Maya to come completely alone, or she would ruthlessly throw Leo into the freezing bay.
The line went dead, leaving Maya staring blankly at the glowing screen of the disposable phone.
She stood up slowly, her tears suddenly replaced by a cold, deadly, and absolute determination.
Maya stated firmly to her sister that she was going to the shipyard to finish this.
Julian immediately blocked her path, his expression hardened, uncompromising, and deeply serious.
He argued that it was a suicide mission, and Vanessa would kill them both the second she handed over that ring.
Maya glared at the veteran capo, her fierce maternal instincts completely overriding all rational logic.
She shouted that she did not care about the syndicate or the money, she just wanted her son back safe.

Julian slowly raised his pistol, aiming it directly at Maya's chest with a profoundly sorrowful look in his eyes.
He stated that he had promised her grandmother he would protect the legacy of the family, and he could not let her throw it away.
