Chapter 2 - The Midnight Escape
Vanessa screamed in pure, unhinged rage as Julian’s words echoed through the frantic ballroom.
She signaled the rest of her hidden mercenaries to aggressively flood the reception hall.
Julian grabbed Maya by the arm and pushed her forcefully toward the kitchen service doors.
He warned her that they had to move right now if she wanted her little boy to survive the night.
Maya scooped her crying son into her arms and ran blindly through the swinging metal doors.
The kitchen staff had already fled in terror, leaving hot pots boiling over and delicate plates shattered on the floor.
Julian provided fierce covering fire, shooting out the overhead fluorescent lights to plunge the room into complete darkness.
They burst out of the rear loading dock and into the freezing, rain-soaked night air.
Julian led them quickly to a sleek, bulletproof black sedan parked silently in the dark alleyway.
He threw the heavy car keys to Maya and ordered her to get into the driver’s seat immediately.
Julian asked with a grim smile if she knew how to drive defensively.
Maya nodded fiercely, strapping her terrified son into the back seat as quickly as humanly possible.
She slammed her foot onto the gas pedal, tearing out of the alley just as heavily armed men swarmed the exit.
Gunfire rained down aggressively on the reinforced glass of the sedan, sounding exactly like deadly metal hail.
Julian leaned dangerously out the passenger window and fired back, effectively keeping the pursuing cars at a distance.
Maya shouted over the roaring engine and screeching tires to ask where they were going.
Julian replied calmly that they were heading to the only safe house Vanessa did not know about.
He looked at the glowing orchid ring on Maya's finger with a complex mixture of awe and deep sorrow.
Julian explained that the ring contained a hidden microchip holding billions in untraceable offshore syndicate accounts.
Maya glanced at the heavy jewelry, finally understanding why her grandmother had hidden it away for so many decades.
