Chapter 8 - The Desperate Flight

Eleanor stared at the glowing screen, realizing she was now a penniless fugitive on the run for murder.
"My husband just cut off every single resource I have," Eleanor said, her voice completely numb.
Emily did not panic.
She had spent her entire life surviving on the tough streets of New York without a dollar to her name.
"Give me your jewelry, all of it," Emily demanded, holding out her hand.
Eleanor immediately stripped off her diamond earrings, her platinum watch, and her massive engagement ring.
They hiked into a nearby working-class town and found a dilapidated pawnshop on a quiet side street.
Emily told Eleanor to wait in the alleyway to avoid being recognized by the cameras.
Emily walked into the dusty shop and placed the fortune of diamonds onto the scratched glass counter.
The pawnshop owner, a large man with a thick beard, examined the jewels with a greedy gleam in his eyes.
He offered her ten thousand dollars in cash, a pathetic fraction of what the diamonds were actually worth.
Emily accepted the cash immediately, knowing they desperately needed untraceable funds to buy a car and burner phones.
She shoved the stacks of bills into her jacket pocket and turned to leave the store.
The pawnshop owner suddenly pressed a hidden button beneath his counter, and the heavy iron security gates slammed shut over the front door.
He pulled a sawed-off shotgun from under the register and aimed it directly at Emily's chest.

"I just saw your mother's face on the news, kid," the man sneered cruelly.
"There is a million-dollar reward for her capture, and you are going to call her right in here."
