Chapter 1 - The Echo of the Past

The restaurant fell into absolute silence as Eleanor Whitmore stood up from her table.

Her heavy wooden chair scraped violently against the polished oak floor.

Emily immediately stepped backward, her hands trembling so hard she nearly dropped her serving tray.

The young waitress looked around frantically, searching for her manager to intervene.

"Who are you?" Eleanor whispered, her voice cracking with decades of buried grief.

"My name is Emily, ma'am," she stammered, pulling her wrist away from the wealthy woman's gaze.

Eleanor reached out a shaking hand, her diamond rings catching the dim restaurant lighting.

"My baby had that exact same mark," Eleanor breathed, tears instantly ruining her perfect makeup.

"I was told my newborn daughter burned to death in a hospital fire twenty-three years ago."

A collective gasp rippled through the dining room as wealthy patrons leaned in to listen.

The restaurant manager hurried over from the reception desk, his face flushed with sudden panic.

"Mrs. Whitmore, is everything all right?" he asked, stepping smoothly between the billionaire and his terrified employee.

Eleanor blinked rapidly, the harsh reality of her public outburst finally setting in.

She opened her designer handbag and pulled out a sleek, gold-embossed business card.

She placed it gently onto the white linen tablecloth next to her untouched duck confit.

"Please, call me when your shift is over," Eleanor pleaded, looking directly into Emily's terrified green eyes.

Eleanor turned around and walked out of the restaurant with as much dignity as she could muster.

Emily stared at the business card, her mind spinning completely out of control.

She had spent her entire life believing her parents had abandoned her at a rundown Brooklyn orphanage.

No one had ever mentioned a hospital fire to her.

Outside on the chilly Manhattan sidewalk, Eleanor waited for her private driver to arrive.

She felt her heart beating wildly against her ribs for the first time in twenty-three years.

Her daughter was actually alive.

But as she climbed into the back of her silver Bentley, she failed to notice the tinted black SUV parked directly across the street.

A man sitting in the driver's seat lowered his high-powered camera and pressed a button on his earpiece.

"Mr. Whitmore, we have a massive problem," the man whispered coldly into the microphone.

"Your wife just found the waitress."
