Chapter 4 - The Corporate Assassin

Eleanor stared at the gold lighter, the devastating reality crashing down on her shoulders.
The man she had slept next to for twenty-five years had orchestrated the fake death of their only child.
"He knew," Eleanor whispered, tears of absolute fury spilling down her cheeks.
"My husband has been hunting you since the day you were born."
Emily shivered in the warm backseat, the adrenaline finally wearing off to leave behind a deep, aching terror.
"Why would he want his own daughter dead?" Emily asked softly.
Eleanor looked out the tinted window at the passing city lights.
"Because the Whitmore fortune comes entirely from my father's side of the family," Eleanor explained.
"If I had an heir, Richard would lose his controlling stake in the company board."
Thomas navigated the Bentley into the underground parking garage of a five-star hotel owned by a rival corporation.
Eleanor booked the penthouse suite under a fake name, paying entirely in untraceable cash.
Once they were safely inside the opulent room, Eleanor finally allowed herself to truly look at Emily.
They shared the same high cheekbones, the same sharp jawline, and the exact same emerald green eyes.
Eleanor gently reached out and traced the heart-shaped birthmark on Emily's wrist.
"I am so incredibly sorry that I wasn't there to protect you," Eleanor wept, pulling her daughter into a desperate embrace.
Emily hugged her back, feeling a strange, profound warmth that she had never experienced in her entire life.
Eleanor wiped her tears away and pulled a sleek laptop from her bag.
"We cannot go to the police," Eleanor stated firmly.
"Richard owns half the judges in this city, and he will just frame us as crazy."
She dialed the number of an independent private investigator named Arthur, a man renowned for taking down corrupt politicians.
She hired Arthur on the spot, transferring a massive retainer fee to his offshore account.
Arthur promised to dig into the hospital fire records from twenty-three years ago immediately.
An hour later, the secure phone on the hotel desk rang loudly in the quiet room.
"Mrs. Whitmore, I found something impossible," Arthur said, his voice laced with shock.

"The doctor who signed your daughter's death certificate didn't die in that hospital fire."
"He is currently living in a ten-million-dollar beachfront mansion in the Hamptons."
