Chapter 6 - The Sins of the Father

Eleanor stumbled backward as if she had been physically struck by a heavy blow.
Her beloved father, the man she had idolized her entire life, was the monster who had stolen her baby.
"He paid me ten million dollars to falsify the records and start the fire in the records room," Dr. Harrison confessed loudly.
"Richard only found out about the girl last year when your father’s secret accounts were finally unsealed after his death."
Emily watched her mother collapse onto the sofa, completely broken by the devastating betrayal of her own family.
"This is too much," Emily whispered, stepping toward the front door.
"If your husband is hunting me for the money, I should just run away and disappear so you can be safe."
Eleanor shot up from the couch and grabbed Emily's arm tightly.
"You are my daughter, and I will burn my entire empire to the ground before I let you go again," Eleanor declared fiercely.
A newfound strength surged through Eleanor's veins as she realized she was the only one left to protect her child.
"We need all the original documents you kept as blackmail material, Doctor," Eleanor ordered.
Dr. Harrison nodded slowly, attempting to stand up from his velvet chair.
Suddenly, a violent spasm ripped through the old man's frail body.
He clutched his throat, gasping desperately for air as his eyes rolled back into his head.
Thick white foam began bubbling out of the corners of his mouth.
He collapsed onto the expensive Persian rug, thrashing violently as the poison seized his nervous system.
Eleanor and Emily screamed, backing away from the dying man in sheer horror.

He had been poisoned by the coffee he was drinking before they even arrived at the house.
Through the large bay windows, Eleanor saw the flashing red and blue lights of three police cruisers speeding up the long driveway.
