Chapter 3 - The Gilded Cage

The blinding headlights of the blocking SUVs completely illuminated the interior of Elias’s car.

Mara screamed in terror as four heavily armed men advanced toward them in the pouring rain.

Elias did not hesitate for a single, terrifying second.

He threw the armored vehicle into reverse and slammed the gas pedal directly to the floor.

The car violently smashed into a parked delivery truck, creating just enough space to maneuver.

Elias expertly spun the steering wheel, aggressively whipping the car into a narrow, dark alleyway.

Bullets sparked violently against the bulletproof rear window, leaving spiderweb cracks in the thick glass.

Mara ducked her head below the dashboard, wrapping her arms protectively around her stomach.

"Hold on tightly!" Elias shouted over the deafening roar of the incredibly powerful engine.

They sped through the labyrinth of back streets, eventually losing the pursuing hit squad in the chaotic city traffic.

Elias navigated them safely to an exclusive, highly fortified skyscraper in the heart of the financial district.

They pulled into an underground private parking garage surrounded by heavily armed security guards.

Elias escorted Mara into a private elevator that whisked them directly to the top-floor penthouse.

The apartment was breathtakingly luxurious, filled with modern art and sweeping views of the city skyline.

But to Mara, the massive, beautiful space felt exactly like a high-tech prison.

"You will be completely safe here, Mara," Elias promised, pouring himself a glass of expensive whiskey.

Mara paced across the polished marble floor, her heart still hammering wildly in her chest.

"Julian tried to murder us in cold blood on a public street!" she cried out in disbelief.

Elias nodded grimly, loosening his silk tie with a heavy, exhausted sigh.

"My brother is a desperate, cornered animal, and that makes him incredibly unpredictable," Elias warned.

He ordered his private medical team to come upstairs immediately to check on Mara and the baby.

The doctors confirmed that the baby was perfectly healthy, though Mara was suffering from extreme stress.

Elias offered her a warm, comfortable bed in the lavish guest suite so she could finally rest.

Mara lay in the dark, staring at the ceiling, wondering how her simple life had become a deadly action movie.

She eventually drifted into a restless, nightmare-filled sleep.

She was abruptly awakened hours later by the sound of aggressive shouting in the main living room.

She crept out of the bedroom and peeked cautiously around the marble hallway corner.

Julian and Bianca were standing in the center of the penthouse, flanked by three uniformed police officers.

Julian held a malicious, arrogant smirk on his face as he stared down his older brother.

"We are here to arrest your little maid for grand larceny, Elias," Julian announced loudly.

Elias crossed his arms, looking completely unfazed by the sudden police presence in his home.

"Mara has not stolen anything from you, Julian," Elias replied with absolute, icy calmness.

Bianca stepped forward, pointing a manicured finger directly at Mara hiding in the hallway.

"She stole my priceless diamond heirloom necklace right before she ran away!" Bianca shrieked dramatically.

The lead police officer approached Mara and demanded to search the pockets of her muddy maid uniform.

Mara confidently handed over her uniform jacket, knowing she had absolutely nothing to hide from them.

The officer reached into the deep pocket and slowly pulled out a massive, glittering diamond necklace.

Mara gasped in pure, paralyzing horror as Julian smiled a dark, victorious smile.
