Chapter 1 - The Stranger in the Rain

The freezing rain soaked completely through Mara’s thin maid uniform as she knelt in the dark mud.

She had come to her mother’s grave desperately looking for a few moments of quiet peace.

Instead, she found a living nightmare waiting for her among the wet, ancient headstones.

Bianca stood towering over her with an expression of pure, unadulterated hatred.

The wealthy woman angrily clutched a crumpled pregnancy test in her perfectly manicured hand.

She fully believed that Mara had been secretly sleeping with her husband, Julian.

Mara knew the absolute truth was far more complicated and dangerous than that.

But before Mara could even open her mouth to explain, Bianca stepped forward and violently struck her across the face.

The harsh, stinging slap echoed loudly through the deserted, rain-soaked cemetery.

Mara fell hard onto the muddy ground right beside her mother’s weathered headstone.

She immediately curled inward and instinctively wrapped both arms securely around her stomach.

Her very first thought was not about her own bleeding lip or bruised cheek.

Her only concern was the safety of the fragile, unborn child growing inside her.

She closed her eyes tightly, preparing for another vicious blow from her furious employer.

Then a tall, imposing stranger abruptly entered through the rusted wrought-iron cemetery gate.

He saw Mara lying defenseless on the cold, muddy ground.

He saw Bianca standing aggressively over her with a raised, threatening hand.

His entire expression instantly shifted into a mask of pure, terrifying fury.

"Get your hands off her."

Mara completely froze on the wet grass.

She remembered that deep, commanding voice from one unforgettable night several months earlier.

It was the magical night she had met the real biological father of her baby.

But when Bianca slowly turned around and saw the stranger, all the color drained from her face.

She looked absolutely, undeniably terrified.

Because Bianca obviously already knew exactly who this powerful man was.

He walked slowly toward them, and the heavy rain seemed to part around his expensive dark suit.

"Elias," Bianca whispered, her voice shaking with genuine, raw fear.

Elias stepped protectively in front of Mara and stared down at the wealthy, trembling woman.

"I suggest you walk away right now, Bianca, before I destroy your entire pathetic life."

Bianca backed away slowly, dropping the stolen pregnancy test into the mud before turning to run.

Elias gently knelt down and offered his warm, strong hand to help Mara stand up.

Mara looked into his piercing dark eyes, completely overwhelmed by intense confusion and fear.

She remembered him as the charming, struggling bartender she had met at a masquerade ball.

"Why is she so terrified of a simple bartender?" Mara asked softly.

Elias looked at her with a heavy, guilt-ridden sigh.

"I was never a bartender, Mara."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a heavy gold signet ring bearing a familiar, powerful crest.

"I am the billionaire who literally owns the estate you scrub floors in, and Julian is my treacherous younger brother."

Mara stepped back in absolute shock, her mind racing to process this massive deception.

Before she could process the betrayal, Elias pulled a folded legal document from his inner jacket pocket.

"And if you do not agree to marry me tonight, Julian is going to legally bulldoze this entire cemetery tomorrow morning."
