Chapter 6 - The Trap

The heavy steel door groaned as it swung open into the smoke-filled office.

I pushed my mother’s wheelchair into the farthest corner, ready to die defending her.

Arthur Reed stood in the doorway, flanked by a dozen heavily armed Russian mercenaries.

He was an older, scarred version of the man from my childhood memories.

Arthur smiled and opened his arms to welcome his daughter.

Clara walked toward him, her head bowed in apparent submission.

“Good girl,” Arthur sneered, looking past her to glare at me.

He raised his weapon, pointing it directly at my chest.

As Arthur prepared to pull the trigger, Clara suddenly dropped to her knees.

She pulled a hidden flashbang grenade from her apron and rolled it perfectly between Arthur’s feet.

“Close your eyes!” Clara screamed at me.

The room erupted in blinding white light and a deafening shockwave.

I opened fire blindly into the doorway, hearing the screams of the mercenaries as they fell.

Clara tackled her father to the ground, disarming him with a brutal strike to the wrist.

I grabbed the oxygen tank and pushed my mother through the chaos, firing my pistol with my free hand.

We burst out of the office and headed for the hidden servant stairs.

Clara followed closely behind, dragging a bleeding and disoriented Arthur by his collar.

She told me we needed him alive to call off the rest of the Russian strike team.

As we reached the underground parking garage, a massive armored truck blocked our only exit.

The driver stepped out of the vehicle, holding a remote detonator linked to the support pillars of the house.
