Chapter 11 - The Phantom of the Past

The heavy gold ring felt like a chunk of solid ice resting in my palm. I stared at the engraved crest of the Hale family, the intricate details illuminated by the soft glow of the balcony lights. It was entirely impossible. I had buried my father twenty years ago. I had stood in the pouring rain, a grieving child, and watched his closed casket lowered into the unforgiving earth after that horrific car bombing.

Clara stepped up beside me, her silk nightgown rustling softly in the evening breeze. She took one look at the ring and the color immediately drained from her face. She knew the history of that piece of jewelry just as well as I did. According to the syndicate’s lore, that ring was supposed to have melted to slag in the inferno that claimed Dominic Hale’s life.

“Is it a replica?” Clara asked, her voice a hushed whisper that barely concealed her rising anxiety.

“It’s authentic,” I replied, tracing my thumb over a microscopic flaw on the band that I remembered from my childhood. “My father used to tap this exact ring against his whiskey glass every night. I know it perfectly.”

The implications were catastrophic. If Dominic Hale was still alive, everything my mother had told me before she passed away was only a fraction of the truth. She had claimed she helped Arthur Reed fake his death to escape my father's madness. But who had helped my father fake his?

I immediately summoned my new head of security, a ruthless but fiercely loyal ex-military contractor named Vance. I handed him the wooden box and the handwritten note, ordering him to lock down the entire estate and trace whoever had dropped it at the gates.

“Bennett,” Clara said softly, placing a warm hand on my tense shoulder. “If your father is alive, he’s been watching us this whole time. He let the Volkovs attack. He let Arthur hold us hostage.”

“He waited until all his enemies were dead,” I realized, my blood running cold at the sheer, calculating malice of the strategy. “He let us do the dirty work of clearing the board.”

I walked back into my office and pulled a hidden lever behind my bookshelf, opening a secure safe that held the syndicate's deepest secrets. I pulled out the old police files from the night of my father’s supposed death. I needed to know exactly whose body was buried in our family mausoleum.

By dawn, Clara and I were standing in the damp, echoing chambers of the Hale family crypt. Vance and two trusted men used crowbars to pry the heavy marble lid off Dominic Hale’s tomb. The grinding stone sounded like a death knell in the quiet morning.

When the lid finally gave way, I shone a heavy flashlight into the dark velvet interior of the casket. Clara gasped, taking a step back and gripping my arm tightly. The casket wasn't empty, but it didn't hold my father. Resting on the pristine white satin were hundreds of heavy, red bricks, placed perfectly to mimic the weight of a human corpse.

My father was a ghost, and he had returned to reclaim his throne.
