Chapter 3 - The Ultimate Betrayal

“Drop the gun, Bennett,” Marcus whispered from the darkness behind me.

I slowly lowered my weapon to the floor, my mind racing with pure rage.

My most trusted friend had sold me out to the Russian syndicate.

“The Volkovs offered me a very generous piece of the city,” Marcus explained smoothly.

I could hear Clara breathing softly in the corner, hiding in the shadows of the unlit room.

Marcus ordered his men to secure the room and grab my mother.

“If you touch her, I will personally peel the skin from your bones,” I threatened.

Marcus just laughed, a cruel sound that echoed in the dark office.

He told me that my mother’s cancer was actually a blessing, saving him the trouble of killing her too.

A flashlight beam cut through the dark, illuminating Marcus’s smug face.

Suddenly, a silver flash sliced through the air and embedded itself deep into Marcus’s shoulder.

It was one of my mother’s heavy metal letter openers, thrown with deadly precision by Clara.

Marcus screamed in agony and dropped his weapon.

I tackled him to the ground, driving my fist repeatedly into his face until he stopped moving.

The emergency backup generators finally kicked on, flooding the room with light.

Clara stood by the desk, shielding my mother with her own body.

I ordered Marcus’s remaining men to surrender, but they raised their rifles instead.

Before any of us could fire, the mansion walls shook with a massive explosion.

The front gates of my estate had just been blown wide open by an armored military vehicle.
