Chapter 20 - The True Bloodline

The intense firefight in the smelting chamber lasted less than five minutes, but it felt like a bloody eternity. Without Dominic barking orders, his mercenaries quickly lost their nerve and surrendered, throwing their weapons to the rusted floor.

I rushed to Clara, pulling her into my arms and holding her tightly against my chest. She was battered and exhausted, but she was alive.

We slowly walked over to where Dominic Hale lay gasping on the cold metal grating. The bullet had pierced his lung. He was drowning in his own blood, staring up at the high ceiling with an expression of terrified disbelief.

“You… you ruined everything,” Dominic wheezed, his eyes darting to look at me. “The legacy… the Hale name…”

“You were the poison in our bloodline, father,” I said coldly, staring down at the man who had caused so much suffering. “You built an empire on betrayal and fear. We are building one on loyalty and strength. The Hale name doesn't belong to you anymore. It belongs to us.”

Dominic tried to speak again, to curse me with his dying breath, but his eyes suddenly glazed over. The infamous, ruthless patriarch of the Hale syndicate exhaled his last rattling breath and finally died for real.

I took Clara’s hand and led her out of the suffocating darkness of the ironworks, stepping out into the cool, refreshing morning air. The sun was rising, casting a brilliant golden light over the city skyline.

Marcus limped over to us, his face smeared with soot, but a triumphant smile on his face. “The compound is secure, boss. The remaining Volkov loyalists have fled the city. The war is officially over.”

Six months later, the syndicate had never been stronger. With Dominic gone and the high council presented with the truth of his crimes, Clara and I were universally recognized as the undisputed rulers of the underworld. We had purged the old, toxic elements of the mafia and instituted a new code of honor that actually protected the innocent people in our territories.

We stood on the balcony of our fully restored estate, looking out over the sprawling city that we finally truly owned. The air was peaceful.

Clara leaned her head against my shoulder, her hand gently resting on her slightly swollen stomach.

“The doctor said everything looks perfect,” Clara whispered, a soft, radiant smile gracing her lips. “He’s going to be healthy.”

I placed my hand over hers, feeling a profound sense of overwhelming joy and fierce protectiveness. We had fought through hell, survived betrayals, and defeated ghosts from the past to secure this future.

“He’s going to be raised differently,” I promised her, kissing the top of her head. “He won't know the cruelty of the past. He will only know the strength of his mother, and the absolute devotion of his father.”

The ghosts of Arthur Reed and Dominic Hale were finally buried forever. A new reign had begun, and the true bloodline of the Hale family was finally pure.
