Chapter 5 - The Custody Threat

Panic flooded my veins with the brutal force of an icy winter storm.

I grabbed my car keys from the glass desk and sprinted toward the private elevator without saying another word.

Mateo ran frantically after me, shouting that running from a federal court order would make me a wanted fugitive.

I did not care about court orders or corrupt judges who could be bought by arrogant men.

I only cared about getting to my innocent daughters before strangers with badges took them away.

I practically flew my heavy SUV through the congested city traffic, ignoring every red light and blaring horn.

My mind raced wildly, trying to figure out how Andrés managed to bribe a federal judge so quickly.

He must have used the last remaining funds from the secret loan to pay off the right people.

I finally reached the heavy iron gates of my private estate and pressed the remote opener.

The gates swung open slowly, revealing a terrifying scene in my front courtyard.

Three black police cruisers were already parked directly in front of my beautiful home.

Two armed officers and a stern woman holding a clipboard were standing on my front porch.

My private security guards were standing firmly between the police and the heavy oak door, refusing to let them pass.

I slammed the brakes, jumped out of my vehicle, and ran fiercely toward the porch.

The woman with the clipboard turned around and glared at me with absolute authority.

She announced herself as a state social worker and demanded that I surrender Sofía and Valentina immediately.

I stood tall, masking my absolute terror with a cold, intimidating glare.

I demanded to see the official warrant allowing them to trespass on my private property.

One of the police officers stepped forward and shoved the signed federal order directly into my face.

He warned me that if I interfered with a lawful custody transfer, he would arrest me for child abduction.

I quickly pulled out my phone and dialed the personal number of the state governor, a man who owed Horizonte Capital a massive political favor.

I put the phone on speaker and told the governor exactly what his corrupt judge was trying to do to my family.

The social worker laughed mockingly, assuming I was faking a phone call to a powerful politician.

Her smug smile completely vanished when the governor's distinct, commanding voice echoed from my speaker.

The governor ordered the police officers to stand down immediately and return to their precinct.

He promised to have the corrupt judge investigated and suspended before the end of the day.

The police officers exchanged nervous glances before slowly backing away from my front door.

The furious social worker threw her hands up in defeat and marched angrily back to her vehicle.

I let out a massive breath of relief as the police cars finally drove away from my home.

I rushed inside to hug my daughters, promising them that nobody would ever take them away from me.

Just as I locked the door behind me, my cell phone rang with a video call from Andrés.

I answered the call, fully prepared to completely destroy him with my words.

The video connected, but Andrés was not on the screen.

Isabella was looking at the camera, smiling a wicked smile while holding a burning piece of paper.

She told me she had just found the original copy of the promissory note in my decoy apartment, and she was burning my only leverage to ashes.
