Chapter 9 - The Unexpected Savior

The deafening echo of the gunshot rang in my ears as my mother dropped the syringe and screamed in terror.
A man climbed clumsily through the broken basement window, holding a smoking revolver in his shaking hand.
It was the corrupt corporate lawyer I had confronted in the city hours ago.
"I am not going to prison for multiple homicides because of your insane greed!" the lawyer shouted at my mother.
He had followed me to the estate, realizing that my mother's reckless plan was going to destroy him as well.
My mother recovered from her initial shock and aggressively lunged toward the lawyer, trying to wrestle the gun away from him.
While they violently struggled against the far wall, I twisted my bound wrists with every single ounce of strength I had left.
The heavy plastic zip-ties dug deep into my skin, tearing my flesh, until they finally snapped with a loud crack.
I leaped out of the chair and charged directly at my mother, tackling her aggressively to the concrete floor.
I pinned her arms behind her back, grabbed a heavy piece of rope from a nearby shelf, and tied her securely to a steel support column.
The lawyer dropped his weapon, completely terrified, and ran back out through the broken window to save himself.
I rushed over to the rusted bed and used a heavy metal pipe to shatter the rusted padlock holding Anna's chains.
"David, the baby is coming right now," Anna screamed, gripping my shirt with agonizing intensity.
I looked around the filthy, freezing basement, realizing there was no cell service and absolutely no time to reach a hospital.
"You have to push, Anna," I told her, my voice remarkably calm despite the absolute terror gripping my heart.
Anna let out a deafening, agonizing scream as she pushed with the last remaining shred of energy in her exhausted body.

I caught the baby in my hands, but a sudden wave of horrifying silence filled the room.
The umbilical cord was wrapped tightly around the baby's neck, and his tiny face was entirely blue.
