Chapter 3 - The Doctor's Secret

I stared at the medical report, my mind racing with a million terrifying questions.
I knew I had never visited a fertility clinic in my entire life, yet this document had my social security number and signature on it.
I placed the paperwork back into the envelope and quietly walked out of the house while Anna was still sleeping.
I drove directly to the clinic listed on the letterhead, determined to get answers from the doctor who signed the report.
I practically kicked the door of his private office open, slamming the fabricated document onto his expensive glass desk.
The doctor looked at the paper, and his face instantly turned a sickly shade of pale.
"Who authorized this fake medical report?" I demanded, leaning over the desk with barely contained rage.
The doctor stuttered nervously, reaching for his telephone to call security.
I snatched the phone out of his hand and smashed it against the wall, demanding the truth immediately.
He finally broke down and confessed that an older woman had paid him fifty thousand dollars in cash to create the forged document.
My mother had planned to plant this envelope in my car so I would find it and divorce Anna before the baby was born.
She was willing to destroy my entire marriage and my sanity just to keep me completely dependent on her.
I felt a massive wave of guilt wash over me for even letting a single seed of doubt enter my mind.
I sprinted back to my car, desperate to get home and hold my wife, promising to never let anyone hurt her again.
I pulled into my driveway and noticed the front door of my house was swinging wide open.
I ran inside, screaming Anna's name, but the house was completely silent.

Sitting on the kitchen counter was Anna's bloody wedding ring, resting on top of a handwritten note.
The note simply said, "If you want to see her alive again, bring the estate deed to the old warehouse."
