Chapter 5 - The Estate's Dark Truth

I rushed toward the heavy metal gate and violently slammed the tire iron against the steel bars, but it would not budge.
I was trapped like an animal in a cage, while my pregnant wife was suffering somewhere out in the cold.
I sat on the dusty floor and forced myself to think logically about the ransom note demanding the estate deed.
My grandfather had established a massive family trust fund that controlled millions of dollars in real estate.
According to the strict rules of the trust, control of the wealth would transfer entirely to me the moment my first biological child was born.
If I died, or if I never had a child, the entire fortune would default to my mother.
She was not just trying to ruin my marriage out of jealousy; she was trying to eliminate the heir to her fortune.
I finally found a rusted ventilation shaft near the ceiling and used the tire iron to pry the metal grate open.
I climbed out into the freezing alleyway, my clothes torn and my hands bleeding, but my resolve was stronger than ever.
I drove directly to the upscale office of my family's corporate lawyer, kicking past the receptionist to enter his suite.
I demanded he immediately draft the paperwork to transfer the entire estate directly into my mother's name.
The lawyer looked at me with an expression of deep pity and slowly shook his head.
"I cannot do that, David, because your mother is not the one who hired me to finalize the trust transfer," he said quietly.
I stared at him in complete confusion, demanding to know who was actually orchestrating this nightmare.
The lawyer sighed heavily and slid a photograph across his polished mahogany desk.
It was a surveillance photo of my mother handing a massive duffel bag of cash to a younger woman.

I felt the room spin wildly as I recognized the woman standing next to my mother.
It was Anna's own younger sister, Chloe.
