Chapter 6 - The Sister's Betrayal

I stared at the photograph of Chloe, my mind completely failing to process the magnitude of this betrayal.
Chloe had always been the sweet, supportive sister who helped us paint the nursery and pick out baby clothes.
The lawyer explained that Chloe was secretly drowning in a massive mountain of gambling debt and owed money to very dangerous people.
My mother had simply purchased Chloe's loyalty, using her to bypass our home security and drag Anna out of bed.
I grabbed the lawyer by the collar of his expensive suit and demanded to know where Chloe was hiding right now.
He gave me the address of a secluded hunting cabin in the mountains, warning me that Chloe was becoming increasingly unstable and violent.
I drove up the winding mountain roads, the freezing rain violently lashing against my windshield as night began to fall.
I pulled into the muddy driveway of the cabin, turning off my headlights so I could approach the building completely unseen.
I crept up onto the wooden porch and peered through the dirty window, searching the dark room for any sign of my wife.
Chloe was sitting on a ruined sofa, nervously biting her nails and staring at a large hunting rifle resting on the coffee table.
I kicked the front door open with tremendous force, sending it crashing into the drywall.
I tackled Chloe to the floor before she could even reach for the weapon, pinning her arms aggressively behind her back.
"Where is my wife?" I screamed directly into her terrified face.
Chloe began to laugh hysterically, tears of madness streaming down her cheeks.
"You are way too late, David," she choked out between completely unhinged giggles.

Suddenly, the intense smell of gasoline filled my nostrils, completely overwhelming the scent of the pine trees.
Chloe smiled wickedly and flicked a silver lighter, dropping it directly onto the gasoline-soaked floorboards of the cabin.
