Chapter 6 - The Vanishing Ink

I returned to the house on Cumberland Avenue playing the role of the deeply depressed, compliant wife perfectly.

I cooked dinner for Gavin and Brooke, quietly serving them meals in my own dining room while they openly held hands.

I purposely kept my eyes cast downward, ensuring the hidden cameras captured my pathetic, broken demeanor.

Gavin cleared his throat aggressively after finishing his expensive steak.

“Audrey, I need you to sign a minor piece of administrative paperwork for the restaurant’s insurance policy,” he lied effortlessly.

He slid a single sheet of paper across the table, along with a sleek black pen.

I immediately recognized the document as a secondary authorization form required by the bank for the massive commercial loan.

Gavin needed my actual, physical signature to finally release the two million dollars from escrow into his offshore account.

“Of course, Gavin,” I whispered meekly, acting as if I lacked the energy to even read the document.

I picked up the pen he offered, but I quickly fumbled it, intentionally dropping it onto the hardwood floor.

“Oh, I am so clumsy today,” I apologized, ducking under the table to retrieve it.

In a fraction of a second, I swapped his pen for an identical one I had purchased earlier that afternoon.

My special pen was loaded with a highly advanced, professional-grade vanishing ink used by magicians.

I sat back up, smiled weakly at my treacherous husband, and signed my name boldly on the authorization form.

“Thank you, Audrey,” Gavin said, quickly snatching the paper away and securing it inside his briefcase.

By tomorrow morning, my signature would completely evaporate, leaving the bank document entirely blank and useless.

The loan sharks would not receive their massive payment, and Gavin’s terrifying countdown would rapidly accelerate.

Later that evening, I walked past the guest room and heard my mother talking in hushed tones to Brooke.

I pressed my ear against the cool wooden door to listen to their secret conversation.

“You need to make sure Audrey attends the christening party next week,” my mother whispered fiercely.

“Gavin has arranged for the police to arrest her at the party for embezzling money from her own restaurant.”

My blood ran cold as I listened to my own mother actively participating in a plot to send me to prison.

“Are you sure the fake evidence will hold up?” Brooke asked nervously.

“Your father planted the fraudulent tax documents in Audrey’s office safe this morning,” my mother confirmed proudly.

They were planning to completely humiliate me in front of all our wealthy friends and have me hauled away in handcuffs.

Once I was locked in a jail cell, they could easily claim I was a criminal and finalize the theft of my entire estate.

I quietly backed away from the door and retreated to the master bedroom to update my brilliant plan.

I needed to clear the fake evidence from my office and prepare a very special set of gifts for the upcoming party.

As I lay in the dark, my phone buzzed with an urgent text message from Marcus, the private investigator.

The message read: “Do not drive your car tomorrow; Gavin just paid a mechanic to tamper with your brake lines.”
