Chapter 4 - The Legacy Clause

I woke up early the next morning and left the house before Gavin or Brooke even opened their eyes.
I drove straight to the historic downtown district to visit the law firm of Harrison and Vance.
Arthur Harrison was an elderly, highly respected attorney who had managed my grandmother’s estate for decades.
When I walked into his mahogany-paneled office, he greeted me with a warm, knowing smile.
“I have been waiting for you to come see me, Audrey,” Mr. Harrison said gently.
I sat down in the leather chair across from his desk and held up my wrist to show him the gold bracelet.
“My grandmother engraved the words First Star on this bracelet, and I need to know why,” I demanded softly.
Mr. Harrison opened a heavy iron safe behind his desk and pulled out a yellowed legal envelope.
“Your grandmother was a very wealthy and highly perceptive woman, Audrey,” the old lawyer explained.
“She always knew that your parents favored Brooke, and she fiercely suspected that Gavin was a greedy opportunist.”
He slid the thick envelope across the desk and tapped it with his silver pen.
“When she purchased the land for your restaurant and your house, she placed the deeds into a generational lock-trust.”
I frowned in confusion, carefully opening the envelope to examine the ancient legal documents.
“What exactly is a generational lock-trust, Mr. Harrison?” I asked.
“It means that you own the properties, but you legally lack the power to transfer them to anyone else,” he answered.
“Any document claiming to transfer ownership to Gavin or your sister is automatically rendered null and void.”
A massive wave of relief crashed over me as I realized the forged trust document was legally worthless.
“But what happens if they try to force a sale or claim I am mentally incompetent?” I pressed.
Mr. Harrison smiled a sharp, brilliant smile that made him look thirty years younger.
“That is where the First Star clause comes into play, my dear.”
He pointed to a specific paragraph highlighted at the bottom of the original deed.
“If any party attempts to seize these assets through fraud, forgery, or marital infidelity, the trust executes a punitive transfer.”
My eyes widened as I read the powerful legal language my grandmother had secretly drafted.
“If Gavin tries to enforce his forged document, he automatically forfeits all of his own personal assets to you,” I read aloud.
“Exactly,” Mr. Harrison confirmed.
“And because your father notarized the fraudulent document, his pension and property are also caught in the punitive snare.”
My grandmother had engineered a flawless, legal landmine, and my greedy family had just happily danced across it.
“Do they know about this clause?” I asked, feeling a rush of adrenaline pulse through my veins.
“No one knows except for you, me, and the ghost of your brilliant grandmother,” he replied.
I thanked Mr. Harrison profusely and left the law firm feeling completely invincible.
I had the ultimate legal weapon securely in my back pocket, but I still needed to understand the two million dollar loan.

I needed to know exactly why Gavin and Brooke were so desperate for that massive amount of cash.
I pulled out my phone and dialed the number of the best private investigator in the city.
