Chapter 1 - The Race to the Altar

I grabbed my car keys and ran out the front door without bothering to lock it.

My heart hammered against my ribs as I started the engine.

The drive to the wedding venue usually took twenty minutes, but I made it there in ten.

My hands were shaking violently as I gripped the steering wheel.

I had spent months trying to protect my children from the ugly truth of this divorce.

I never wanted them to carry the weight of Ryan’s betrayal.

But as I pulled into the crowded parking lot of the country club, I realized my nine-year-old daughter was fighting a battle I hadn't seen coming.

I left the car in a fire lane and sprinted toward the grand ballroom.

The heavy oak doors were closed, but I could hear a strange, echoing silence coming from inside.

I pushed the doors open with both hands.

The scene inside the ballroom made me freeze in my tracks.

Two hundred guests were sitting in absolute, stunned silence.

Ryan was standing at the altar in his tuxedo, his face pale and completely drained of color.

My sister stood next to him in her white gown, clutching her bridal bouquet so tightly her knuckles were white.

But my eyes immediately fell to the center of the aisle.

My sweet, quiet Amelia was standing halfway to the altar.

She was holding a microphone in her right hand.

In her left hand, she held a thick stack of printed papers.

"Mom," Amelia said into the microphone, her voice carrying through the massive room the second she saw me.

Everyone in the room turned to look at me, but I only had eyes for my daughter.

I rushed down the aisle and stood right behind her, placing a protective hand on her shoulder.

"What is going on here?" I demanded, glaring at Ryan.

Ryan opened his mouth to speak, but he was trembling too much to form a word.

Amelia looked up at me with tears in her eyes, but her jaw was set with fierce determination.

"I went into Dad's home office yesterday to look for a charger," Amelia explained into the microphone.

"But I found an unlocked tablet hidden in his bottom drawer instead."

My sister let out a terrified gasp and took a step backward, nearly tripping over her expensive veil.

"Amelia, please put that down," my mother hissed from the front row, standing up to intervene.

"No," Amelia said firmly, raising the papers in the air.

"Dad didn't just cheat on Mom, he has been planning to steal us from her."

Amelia flipped to the first page and began reading a printed text message aloud.

"Once the wedding is done, we will file for full emergency custody of the kids," Amelia read, quoting Ryan's exact words.

"We will tell the judge Annie is mentally unstable from the miscarriage, and she will lose everything."
