Chapter 9 - The Impossible Choice

Grace fell to her knees on the cold hospital floor, completely broken.

She looked at the glass window where her little boy was fading away by the second.

She turned her tear-stained face toward Julian and nodded slowly.

She agreed to go with him, sacrificing her own freedom to save her son's life.

Julian smiled triumphantly and turned to follow the doctor into the prep room.

I grabbed Grace by the shoulders, pulling her back to her feet.

I whispered fiercely that I would not let this happen.

I told her to trust me, even though I hadn't earned it in three years.

I pulled out my phone and dialed the private number of my family's chief rival, a ruthless corporate raider named Vance.

I offered Vance all of my shares in the family company for pennies on the dollar, effectively handing him control of my mother's empire.

All I asked in return was a massive favor involving the hospital board.

Amelia overheard the call and her smug expression completely vanished.

She screamed that I was destroying my own legacy.

I looked at her and said my legacy was inside that hospital room, not in a boardroom.

Within three minutes, the hospital administrator sprinted down the hallway.

He held up a signed injunction from a federal judge.

The hospital had just been bought out by Vance's holding company, and the administrator was ordered to block Julian's legal maneuver.

Furthermore, the administrator revealed a critical medical loophole.

The triplets were legally born while Grace and I were still married, making me their presumed father under state law regardless of DNA.

Julian could not take the children anywhere without a lengthy court battle.

Julian's face twisted into an ugly snarl of pure rage.

He threatened to walk out of the hospital right now and let the boy die.

But the hospital security guards immediately surrounded him, drawing their stun guns.

The administrator stated that under the new corporate policy, Julian was being placed under emergency medical detention to save a minor's life.
