Chapter 10 - The False Dawn

The security guards forced Julian into a wheelchair and strapped his arms down securely.

He screamed legal threats and cursed my name as they wheeled him into the surgical prep room.

Amelia tried to intervene, but a guard escorted her off the hospital premises entirely.

The nightmare seemed to finally be breaking apart.

Grace slumped against my chest, crying tears of profound relief.

I held her tightly, promising her that the worst was finally over.

The surgery took three agonizing hours, but the doctor finally emerged with a tired smile.

He announced that the bone marrow transplant was a complete success.

The little boy's vitals were stabilizing, and his color was already returning.

Grace and I were allowed into the recovery room to sit by his bedside.

I looked at the two little girls sleeping soundly on a couch in the corner of the room.

For the first time in my life, I felt like I was exactly where I was supposed to be.

I had lost my company and my wealth, but I had gained a family.

Grace reached across the hospital bed and gently laced her fingers through mine.

She smiled at me, a genuine, beautiful smile that I hadn't seen in years.

I leaned in to kiss her forehead, feeling a profound sense of victory.

Then, my phone rang from a blocked number.

I answered it, expecting it to be my mother screaming about the company shares.

Instead, a deep, raspy voice spoke through the speaker.

The man on the line laughed darkly and asked if I really thought I had won tonight.

I demanded to know who was calling.

The man replied that Julian was just a distraction, a pawn he had used to keep me busy at the hospital.

He told me to look out the window at the parking lot below.

I walked to the glass and saw a black van speeding away into the rain.

The man whispered that he was the real father of the two little girls, and he was taking them home.
